The Ford Motor Company’s Transit Connect Electric has won over a new customer that knows a thing or two about electricity: DTE Energy, headquartered in Detroit. In fact, DTE recently bought four of the electric vehicles (EVs) to add to its fleet as part of its ongoing efforts to increase its use of alternative-fuel sources. The rugged and durable Transit Connect Electrics won’t be coddled, either. They’ll be used out in the field by Detroit Edison’s repair and maintenance crews doing normal, everyday activities—while delivering anything-but-normal fuel savings. That’s because the Transit Connect Electric can leverage its Force Drive powertrain —developed by longtime Ford partner Azure Dynamics—and advanced lithium-ion battery technology to provide up to 80 miles of all-electric, no-emissions driving on a single charge. “The addition of these all-electric Transit Connects to our fleet will help Detroit Edison advance the use of electric vehicles in a couple of ways,” said DTE president and CEO Steven Kurmas. “First, we will learn firsthand how these vehicles perform in day-to-day field operations and how we can make the best use of their unique characteristics. Second, they will help us learn more about how the use of electric vehicles by consumers and businesses will impact the electrical system and what utilities need to do to support adoption of these vehicles.” And while it’s the first of Ford’s electrified vehicles to reach the market, it won’t be the last. The company plans to launch four more during 2012, including the Focus Electric, an EV version of the popular Focus compact; the C-MAX Hybrid, a new high-efficiency multi-activity vehicle; the plug-in hybrid version of that vehicle, the C-MAX Energi, which will deliver an extended electric driving range as compared to the C-MAX; and a new next-gen Ford hybrid that is currently being kept under wraps. The special delivery to DTE also involved another long-time Ford partner of note: The Transit Connect Electrics were bought from Suburban Ford in Sterling Heights, Mich., which recently became the first Ford dealership in the world to sell a full line of gas, hybrid and electric vehicles—but again, it won’t be the last.

Ford CNG Transit Connect Taxis Are Connecting With More Cities

August 12, 2011 at 8:36 am Article by Brien Ford

With their ability to save on fuel costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 to 40 percent, Ford Transit Connect taxis that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) are being hailed as a breakthrough by cities across the country. And this includes major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and Chicago, both of which will be seeing more of these vehicles on the road this year than ever before. In the Los Angeles area, Yellow Cab of Anaheim and Cabco Yellow Inc. of Orange County have combined to order 119 CNG Transit Connect taxis , with 50 on their way in the next two months and the rest to be delivered by the end of the year. Plenty more of the vehicles should be hitting California streets in the near future, since the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has now officially approved the use of CNG Transit Connect taxis in that state. Meanwhile, in the Windy City, the Taxi Medallion Management company recently put 12 CNG Transit Connect taxis into service to help reach its goal of reducing emissions by 25 percent. And these are just some of the latest places where Ford’s CNG-powered people mover is making its mark. West Haven and Hartford, in Connecticut, will soon have a fleet of 70 CNG Transit Connect taxis in service, with cab companies in Las Vegas and St. Louis joining the club later this year as well. Of course, this increased interest in the high-efficiency Ford makes perfect sense, according to Gerald Koss, marketing manager for Ford Fleet Operations: “The Transit Connect Taxi was developed using market research we conducted with the taxi industry to better understand what customers wanted in a future vehicle. The more conversations we had, the more interest we saw in a taxi with the flexibility of offering a compressed natural gas version.”

Ford Releases “Blueprint For Sustainability”

August 6, 2011 at 7:59 am Article by Brien Ford

Continuing its ongoing commitment to providing the public with a transparent look at both its progress and its future plans to address pressing environmental, safety and social issues, the Ford Motor Company recently released its 12th annual corporate sustainability report, titled “Blueprint for Sustainability: Driving Change.” Highlights of this year’s report—which covers Ford sustainability efforts for calendar year 2010—include environmental achievements like: Reducing CO2 emissions from 2010 model-year vehicles in the U.S. by 10.5 percent as compared to 2006. Offering 12 vehicles with best-in-class fuel economy and four models that can achieve at least 40 mpg highway—a lineup unmatched by any other full-line automaker. Began delivery of its first all-electric vehicle, the Ford Transit Connect Electric; the company’s next EV , the Ford Focus Electric, will go on sale later this year, followed by three more electrified vehicles—including the Ford C-MAX Hybrid and Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid—by 2013. Safety advances such as: Earning Top Safety Pick Status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for both the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta, the latter of which also leads its segment in the New Car Assessment Program ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Expanding its Driving Skills for Life driver-education program for teens from nine to 15 states, courtesy of an investment of $1 million. And societal efforts that included: Listing water as one of its top sustainability concerns; Ford already began making a concerted effort to reduce the amount of water used per vehicle, reducing this amount by 49 percent since 2000. The company aims to decrease water usage by a further 5 percent this year. Collaborating in the establishment of common industry guidance and reporting formats for global automakers and tier 1 suppliers to use in tracking greenhouse gas emissions. “The Blueprint for Sustainability encompasses a wide range of efforts at Ford to provide sustainable transportation around the world,” said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. “Ford is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products and facilities, supporting positive social change and ensuring economic viability for long-term growth.” To view Ford’s “Blueprint for Sustainability: Driving Change” in its entirety, visit www.ford.com/go/sustainability .
